As 2019 gets near to its end the No Kill Movement is experiencing some pretty exciting times. Probably the most exciting news is that two candidates for President of the United States are talking about making the USA a No Kill nation. Both Cory Booker and Julián Castro have policy platforms that support ending the killing of healthy and treatable animals in animal shelters. They also have plans for how they will accomplish this. There is no doubt that this marks an historic time for No Kill. More people are talking about it than ever before.
I first learned of Cory Booker's support for No Kill when his then Chief of Staff spoke at a No Kill conference hosted by the No Kill Advocacy Center in Washington, DC several years ago. I understand that Secretary Castro developed his policy recommendations after learning about policy recommendations of the No Kill Advocacy Center. The substance of Castro's platform supports that conclusion.
Recently, there were announcements that the states of Delaware and Michigan had achieved No Kill status -- announcements that were widely celebrated across the country. Unfortunately, according to our assessment, the announcements were premature, as healthy and treatable animals are still being killed in both states, in fairly significant numbers.
