Growing Indoors: Great Winter Fun

Window garden
In one of the south facing windows in our home, we grow Lavender, Oregano, Basil, Kale, Aloe and more.

Each year we do what we can to expand the growing that we do. This winter, we decided to expand our indoor growing space and we have had a ton of fun doing it. The setup is as simple as can be: We put a long, narrow table next to a south-facing window and because the Sun there is partially obstructed, we added an LED energy-efficient grow light. This has allowed us to add to our winter growing beyond what we grow in the solarium upstairs. In this tiny space, we have been growing Lavender, Basil, Oregano, Aloe Vera and even Kale.

This is the first time we have ever cut the top off a Kale plant, rooted it and brought it indoors for the winter and we are thrilled to have kale growing indoors. Come spring, we will have a head start for the greens section of the garden, and having the fresh herbs for cooking this winter has been a delight! Everyone should devote some space to growing something to feed themselves. Doing so feeds the soul.
