We are really excited about one of our new projects: Worms. We are big fans of worms. Our outdoor garden area is filled with them. We have been encouraging, feeding and otherwise tending the worms in our soil for many years. Now, we are adding indoor red wigglers in this nifty worm tower we got from one of our Transition Longfellow associates. They are moving and didn't have space for it. But, we had the perfect spot in our solarium.
The worms should arrive in the next day or so. So, today, we decided to spend a bit of time getting their new home ready with some of the perfect bedding: a little garden dirt, some coconut coir, dried leaves and some plant cuttings. We also tossed in some old toilet paper tubes. We also have a nice stack of compostable scraps on the counter waiting for them. We figure they may be hungry when they get here.
They will help us make worm tea fertilizer for our plants and garden, as well as worm castings for fertilizer.
People worry about the smell of composting indoors. So far it smells wonderful! So long as we don't overload it with scraps, we hope it will always smell nice and fresh, thanks to the red wigglers.
How are the worms doing? You know, they LOVE leftover Halloween pumpkins. I even throw bits of mine in the freezer for them to eat during winter.
Good for you! It’s a great way to make some quality compost in the cold months. I am oddly fond of my wigglers, been keeping them for years.
I'm really excited about this project and all of the things we can learn from it!
